027 | [Situation] About 1 1/2 Miles W, [West] of Maxwelltown This is the site of an ancient village Mr Thomas Laurie who is above 50 years of age & is occupier of the farm as was also his father, says that there was no houses nor remains of houses during his own or his father's time But he has often heard it remarked that during his grandfather's time there was about 40 families in it. Joseph Walsh Provost of Maxwelltown says that he heard his grandfather say he remembered the day that King George II was proclaimed at the marKet cross in this village. There are traces or remains of buildings to be seen built along a little lane or passage leading to the farm house of Terreglestown [there are?] some paving as it were a street which Thomas Lawrie says is the paving of the street belong to the village. |

[Notes] -- Upon the farm of Terreglestown about a mile to the east
of the church there was at one time a village of considerable
extent. Its population is said to have amounted to about
380. The pavement of the street is still seen and extends
a considerable length -- Stat. Acct [Statistical Account] of Kirkcudbright 1845- Page 233
In 1510 Andrew Lord Herries of Terregles obtained a New charter
of his estates and this charter erected the village of Terregle's
into a Burgh of Barony to be called Herries. -- Regist. Mag. Sig. [Registrum Magni Sigilli] 23.84
The village still continues however to be called by its ancient name -- Chalmer's Caledonia Vol [Volume] III Page 336
