054 | [Situation] 1/2 Mile N N E [North North East] of Balmae One of the largest fortresses that is known to be in the south of Scotland, situated on the top of a very commanding hill on the farm of Drummore. It is of an oval shape (hollowed in the top) and surrounded on all sides by a pretty intire double fosse & ramparts, with the exception of a small portion of its S, [South] East side which is nearly obliterated by the plough &c, On & near the centre of the fort, is the appearance of a pit partially filled up with stones and to what it may have been devoted for is not known in this locality. The Statistical Acct. [Account] mentions of a well the sides built of stone, which some think supplied the Garrison with water, No trace of such can now be found "The fortress which may be considered the border garrison of the Selgovae stood on an eminence of about 250 feet high at Drummore. The Romans retained possession of it during the reigns of the Antonines or as some think for nearly 300 years." Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] 1845 Page 11 |

Parish of Kirkcudbright
Near the eastern influx of the Deva,
the Selgovae had a hill fort, which may
be deemed their frontier garrison,on the west,
which is called, by Ptolemy, Caerbantorigum;
Signify in the speech of the British tribes, the
fort on the conspicuous height. From Caer
the well known term for a fort, Ban Conspicuous,
and Tor a height, with a latin termination.
