[South West] of Balmae A light house erected in 184_ and built by the Northern light house Company at a cost of a bout ____ It is situated on the Little Ross Island and near to its Western Shore, and risen to the height of about 60 or 70 feet above the Sea level at high water and is seen for a distance of about 30 Miles on Sea. Its light is of the description called the Dioptric Light, and shews a standing and flashing light at the same time, the flashing of the light is produced by 12 French lenses mounted on a revolving frame which makes a complete revolution each Minute, and consequently a flash each 5", the above frame is propelled by weight through suitable machinery regulated by worm & worm wheel, and is calculated to run 4 hours. The standing light is produced by 160 Mirrors disposed around the lamp in 8 tiers, three of which tiers are below and 5 above the lenses that produce the flashing light, The mirrors are on a fixed frame, And adjusted at Such an angle as to throw the light on to or nearer than the Horizon.The Light consists of one burner with 4 wicks and is adapted for Spermaceta or Colza oil. The oil is supplied to the burner by Machinery for that purpose and is regulated accordingly, the consumption of oil is about 1 gallon in 6 1/2 hours. |
