051 | This name applies to spot of ground which is handed down by tradition as being the place where an improper intimacy was carried on between one of the Abbots of Dundrennan and Lady Kirkarswell n [nee] Broughton. The traditionary story is related in nearly the following terms. The Laird of Kirkarswell suspecting an improper intimacy between one of the Abbots of Dundrennan and his lady gave orders that he was going from home for some time, and concealing himself with a few sturdy men to whom he related the circumstances, among whins and other Brushwood, after waiting some time they observed the Abbot and Lady proceed to criminal intercourse at a place called Allan's Cross near the junction of the Abbey Burn with that of the Balmangan Burn, the laird and his men rushed from their hiding place, seized the Abbot and deprived him of manhood, there is to this day a gravestone in the graveyard of Dundrennan with the following inscription. "Elizabeth Vans - sometime lady Broughton." The above is a popular tradition and the Kirkarswell estate was fined in an annual sum for the outrage which is still thought to be subject to if indeed it is not collected. |

One of the monks of Dundrennan having been suspected of improper intimacy with Lady Broughton her husband slew him at a place called Allan's Cross till this day, Murray was obliged to pay a fine as a compensation for the murder to the Abbey which fine ( £10 ) has continued to be and is still paid to the crown since the dissolution of the monastery
