57C No. 9—Dundrennan
Dundrennan --Village--A small village situated about 5 miles S. E. [South East] of Kirkcudbright, and a mile from the main road leading from that town to Auchencairn. The houses in it are principally feus on the Estates of Mr Fergusson of Orroland and Mr. Maitland of Dundrennan. They have been in great measure, built of the stones, which formerly composed the Abbey of Dundrennan. The houses are chiefly two stories in height. The population is about 160 consisting chiefly of Agricultural labourers a few weavers, and other mechanics, and shopkeepers. It contains a Post Office which is subject to Kirkcudbright. Two Schools, (The Parish and Free Church Schools), and two Public Houses.--Rerwick [Rerrick]--James Gibson
