[South] East of Auchencairn Village This object is on the farm of the Ha' and is Situated on high ground & planted with mixed wood, it is not raised or elevated in its formation the centre is quite level with the general surface and was surrounded by a great stone rampart some of which stand three feet high at present (but perhaps it has been repaired) Altho' [Although] this object was pointed out to me by James Kilpatrick as a moat and is so called by others, yet I do not think from its appearance that it is a moat, as moats are generally raised in their formation, but the inhabitants do not know what to call such objects whither Camp, Moat or Fort, my Opinion is that it was a Fort surrounded by a thick rampart of stones placed on very advantageous ground |
