050 | [Situation] On the N.W. [North West] side of the town of Kirkcudbright. A Small Quay situated at the Western side of the town on the Eastern side of the River Dee, and consisting of two small Jetties, one of them is substantially built with Stone & Lime & the other is of a wooden construction principally for the accommodation of the weekly Steam packet which plys betwixt this & Liverpool. The former jetty was erected in 1823-24, to which the magistrates of Kirkcudbright expended about £1800 in building it, to account of which expenditure they had received from the Convention of Royal burghs in principal & accumulated interest about £1100. The balance of £700 was paid from the funds or credit of the burgh. The latter was erected in 1835-36 and to which the sum of £112 was expended by the magistrates in its erection. No. [Number] of vessels belonging the Port is 26 (exclusive of the Steam packet) with their respective tonnage varying from 30 to 100 tons burden total about 1000. Harbour dues one penny per ton. The centre of the River opposite the Quay is 30 feet deep at Spring tides & about 500 in breadth. At neap tides its depth is from 20 to 25 feet & its breadth about 400 feet. |
