050 | [Situation] About 1/2 Mile S.S.W. of the town of Kirkcudbright. This place is traditionally handed down as being the Spot where the outer gate or entrance to St Mary's priory Stood. As the priory was surrounded with high walls which inclosed an extensive Area and contained two Gates still called the Great Cross and Little Cross. The Outer Gate but now called the Great Cross was at least 1/2 a mile from the priory and Stood at the above place which is called the Great Cross See Statistical Acct. [Account] |
