On an island in Loch Fergus now drained Stood the Strong mansion of the ancient Lords of Galloway. There
were two fortified islands in the lake, the larger about 90 paces in diameter was called Palace Isle and the Smaller,

In the farm of Loch Fergus there is a large artificial lake with two Small islands in it. One of these is
called Palace Isle the other Stable Isle. Both of them bear Strong marks of ancient fortifications and unquestionably
the Seats or castles of Fergus Lord of Galloway.- Sinclairs Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account]

Uchtred while residing in his father's house in Loch Fergus was attacked on the 22d of September 1174
by his brother Gilbert who having overpowered his elder brother ordered his death with every circumstance of aggravated cruelty
