" St Cuthbert's Church Stood at the distance
of a quarter of a mile to the east of the town. Its
Churchyard is Still used as the principal cemetery
of the parish. Near it are two Knolls Called the "Angel Hill"
and the "Bell Hill". On the latter eminence was rung the
bell used for assembling the congregation. This probably
was a hand bell for such bells at the time we speak of
were often used at church" Nicholson's Hist. [History] of Galloway vol. [volume] I P. [Page] 493
