| SAINT MARY'S ISLE PRIORY (site of) | Saint Mary's Isle Priory (Site of) | William Muir (Factor) n&s Kirkcudbright Earl Selkirk St Mary's Isle house |
050 | The site of St Marys Isle Priory which the Earl of Selkirk has pointed out his Lordship says that the South Side of the Isle House is part of the Priory and that a few years ago he had occasion to have a part of it bored when he found that the wall was built without lime in the Centre, but that it was of Considerable thickness. Also his Lordship states that historians are quite wrong in their descriptions respecting it extent, as it only Consisted of that portion , of the Marginal sketch of the Isle house which should showed marked (on trace) and that it was a mear appendage of Holyrood house having about 100 acres of St Mary's Isle granted to it for its maintenance, his Lordship further states that some years ago the great Cross was Knocked down and before he was aware of it, two men (Roman Catholics) took it away and hid it in some place that his Lordship has not hitherto found out. |
