| OLD JAIL [Kirkcudbright] | Old Jail | John Nicholson Stationer Kirkcudbright | 050 | The Base of the Tower contains a large cistern pertaining to the waterworks A spacious modern building two stories high, in good repair and well lighted. The upper apartments are use as a reading and billard rooms by Gentlemen, and an apartment for the person who takes care of both; the under apartments are let as stores, except a portion at the west end which is used as a black hole. At the east end is a Tower and spire and is about 100 feet high, on the Tower is a clock which can be seen east and north sides. It is situate at the west end of the east and west portion of the street, and looks down the north and south part of the street, both parts nearly forms a right angle, and is the property of the Burgh of Kirkcudbright. A tolerably large building occupied as a Gaol until 1815 when it was Superseded by the present one one portion of it now a billiard room another a reading room Military Stores are Kept in the upper portion the ground floor is occupied by a Lock up as fire engine room ans Store rooms. It has a tower Surmounted by a Spire. In the Spire are three bells one of which is dated 1646 and a clock with faces of very Antique workmanship supposed to be of the Same date the Building situated at the Market Cross and commands a view of Old Street & High Street and is the property of the Burgh |
