Fortifications
from St Mary's Wind it has been Converted into a covered drain in order to improve the play ground for the Scholars at the Academy At the North Corner of the playground it Makes Another abrupt turn and also becomes an open ditch from this point it runs nearly direct North forming the boundary of the gardens and ultimately Joins the River Dee at a point about 14 Chains West from the Starting point at the dock, The whole Space included being nearly a Square.
In 1547-8 The Borough being Summoned to Surrender to a party of English commanded by Sir Thomas Carleton it was so successfully defended that the English were under the necessity of retiring which however appears to have been accomplished with the loss of one Man. See Nicholson's History Vol 1 page 472 And Statistical Account of Kirkcudbrightshire page 20. The open parts of this ditch are a great nuisance but at a trifling expense could be filled by a constant Stream which would prove another convenience to the many already enjoyed by the inhabitants of this Town
