The fortifications of Kirkcudbright which is Said to have consisted of a Wall and fosse, with two gates for Ingress and Egress the Site of one of these Gates is Still pointed Out that of the other cannot be ascertained. A considerable part of the ditch is Still partly later other parts totally obliterated It left the River Dee at the South West Corner of the present Dock and is quite Obliterated until it reaches the N West [North West] Corner of the New Church Yard where it is Nearly entire for about two Chains & forms the boundary between the Church Yard and the Gardens on the West of the Church At the Southern most Corner of the Churchyard it becomes quite invisible the first of the gates hung(this Spot is called "The Meikle Yett") from high Street it is again invisible for about Two Chains And is Again seen at the End of Corby Slap where it makes a turn of Nearly 90 [degrees] going in a direction Nearly West until it reaches St Mary's Wind The latter portion is Now a Stagnant ditch
