050 | [Situation] 12 Chains S by E [South by East] of Kirkcudbright. A Small plantation near the town of Kirkcudbright, which is said derived its name from a man whose christian name was called Thomas who was also proprietor of a Small narrow Stripe of land then used as a garden The land on each Side of it belonged to the Earl of Selkirk who wished to purchase it and offered a considerable Sum above its value, but Thomas its proprietor was determined not to Sell it. And from which circumstance the Earl thence thickly planted trees upon his own land and close around Tommy's garden which in the course of time the trees grew up & so completely shaded it, that it rendered it quite useless, & was by which means that the Earl got it into his possession. - |
