| LOCH FERGUS | Loch Fergus | William Martin Gamekeeper St Mary's Isle John Muire Loch Fergus |
050 | This name applies to an Ovalar piece of Land about 30 Chains in length and 8 Chains in breadth, which until a recent period was covered with water forming a beautiful Loch said to be of artificial origin, and formed to surround and thus strengthen the position of Fergus Lord of Galloway which stood on palace Island. When the Loch was in existence it surrounded two Islands which still bear the names of Palace Island, and Stable Island. The whole of the water has been drained away and the land is fast becoming a fertile meadow. The water line is still very traceable |
