050 | [Situation] 1/2 mile W by S [West by South] of Kirkcudbright. This name applies to an object of peculiar construction for catching fish. It consists of a row of stakes having two obtuse angles of about 120 degrees each near the centre from each angle to the end of the row of stakes is interwoven with rods like wicker work, which serves to conduct the Salmon etc to the eye or portion between the angles where a gap is left of about 12 ft into which a net somewhat resembling a bag net is fitted. Above and extending across the gap is a platform on which sits a fisherman, who holds a number of check lines or Strings in his hand by which he is warned of a fish Striking the net, when by means of a long pole he hauls up the bottom portion of the net & takes from it whatever he may have caught There are several of the same construction on the river all locally Called fish yairs or yeards. |
