050 | [Situation] In High street and near to the S. [South] side of Castle Street. The Site of a gate of the old [fortifications] part of the Street of this place is also known by the name Meikle Yet and which place the principal gate is said to have been . There are still 2 stones one on each side of the Street each stone is perforated with a hole, in which hole it is said the lower pivots of the gate turned. From its appearance it would appear to have been a folding gate Surmounted by an Arch, On the Arch was three rounds balls composed of Stone one of which were taken away to a considerable distance and was afterwards brought back and placed along with the other two on an Archway at the entrance to St. Cuthbert's Graveyard. According to tradition there was another gate, which every enquiry has been made conserning it, but the place that it occupied cannot be ascertained. - |
