[Situation] 3 or 4 chains SE [South East] of Old Orchardton This Ancient Tower which is situated on the Farm of Old Orchardton the Estate of Mrs. Robertson of Almerness. is now in ruins it was built in circular Form the diameter of its base 28 feet The Walls 5 feet thick. and 30 feet in height near it is the remains of a Vault which probably had communication with the Tower It is reported to have been the residence of a Family of the name of Maxwell. the last of the name who resided in it is said to have been Sir Robert Maxwell about the beginning of the 17th Century This is the Castle of Helen Gower in Scots Novel of Guy Mannering |
