179 | Near the remains at the Ancient "Chapel" of "Cove", is an immense "Cave" in the solid rock. In this Cave is to be seen an "Altar" of rude masonry, & directly over the same is an inscription of a Cross, cut on the rock; there is also a fort, hollowed out of the rocky floor (T.P.W.) [Thomas Pilkington White] not far from the entrance. In close proximity to this, is another Cavebut much Smaller of which tradition says nothing. Revd. [Reverend] Mr. McKenzie relates the following traditional acct. [account]. St Columba's hatred towards Ireland was so great that he left it, and landed at "Cove", on his going up to the tops one day, he caught sight of the spot he too much disliked, returning he immediately departed, declaring that no longer would he remain where the shores of Ireland were visible & proceeded to "Iona" Year 563. "Near this Chapel, is a Consecrated Cave, which gives it name to the farm on which the Chapel is situated. Its Altar & font still remain, & over the former, a cross is cut on the solid rock, by no unmasterly hand. It was afterSt Columba left this place, that he Sailed for Iona & built his famous Seminary there". Old Statistical Account. |
