100 | The Authorities mentioned state that the battle between Bruce & McDougall in 1308 was fought at the place marked on the Trace and there are a number of Cairns at the spot. "(In 1308 Bruce returned again to Argyllshire, with the view of chastising the Lord of Lorn. The McDougalls lay in ambush to surprise him at the pass of Cruachan (i.e. Brander), but Bruce used the precaution of ordering Douglas to make a circuit towards the summit of the mountain, his own troops having Loch Awe on their left & Ben Cruachan on their right. On entering the Pass Bruce was attacked by the men in ambush, which when Douglas observed. he rushed down on the assailants sword in hand.
