171 | The remains of what has been a very large cairn, Its whole extent is still plainly marked, & measures upwards of 40 yards long and about 20 broad. The only perfect remnant is at the north east end, where there are several stones or slabs placed on end and roofed over the top with other slabs. At the head is a large oval flat stone supported by two upright pillars, after the manner of a cromlech. At the south west corner there is a small erect stone, but the greater part of the cairn has been cleared away. "There are also to be seen the remains of what are called borradhs or cairns ...... The largest was about 2 miles north from the Church ......... The pile of stones has long ago been completely removed for the purpose of building dikes." vide New Stat Acct. [Statistical Account] |
