102 | On the Site of the ancient Stronghold of the Lords of Badenoch Stands the Castle of Ruthven, on a green mount, jutting into a marshy plain. The mount is steep on three Sides, and tapering to the top, as it were artificial, the area on the top About 120 yards long and sixty broad; the South wall was nine feet thick, through which the arched entry was guarded by a strong iron gate and a portcullis; the other walls were Sixteen feet high and four thick, and the North end of the Court, with two towerS on the Corners, and some low buildings and a draw Well. The ruins of the last of the Ruthven Strongholds, have an interest attached to them on account of their historical associations having been Succesively occupied by the bold and ruthless Wolf of Badenoch, by the beautiful And unfortunate Queen Mary, in her hunting excursions Among the Highland Wilds, by band of warriors engaged in bloody strifes Contending for evanescent power; and exhibiting in the ruins a Sad Memorial of the vanity of human ambition" Sic transit gloria mundi.
