002 | This name applies to a plain standing stone about six or eight feet high, situated near the east end of village. For further information see below. This cross has been shifted three times during the last 100 years. It stood first on a mound opposite the Caledonian Hotel and was then ornamented with Cross Croslets; it was taken down by the late Lord Lovat and deposited in the old store house. The present Lord Lovat first erected it 20 yards west of its present site, then removed it to its present situation. It used to have chains attached to it for holding criminals under going sentence for theft &c &c. Copied from examiners replies to remarks |
