069 | This name signifies "Cummings's Seat", and is applied to cairn of stones situated about ¼ of a mile north of the 5th milestone from Fort Augustus on General Wade's Military Road from that place to Inverness. Some say that on this spot, one of the chieftains of the Clan Cumming, while on the way to visit some of his dependence, fell sick and died. While others say, that he was pursued from Fort Augustus by some of his Clansmen and killed at this spot on account of his misdeeds, and was buried at the old burying ground a short distance south of Fort Augustus which bears the name of Cill Chuimein "Cummings Burial Ground" and this chieftain is supposed to have been the first buried there. |
