| DUNVEGAN CASTLE | Dunvegan Castle | Mr. R. Mackintosh schoolmaster Mr McKenzie, Postmaster Mr P McLean, Merchant Dunvegan Black's map Johnstone's map |
021 | This name applies to a very ancient building said to have been built in the ninth century it is situated on a rock which is said to be the site of an ancient tower of which there are many in this parish, and are commonly called "Duns" commanding a fine view of Dunvegan Loch. A portion consisting of a very high tower was added 400 years later by Alastair Crotach (or the humpbacked). These two are conjoined by means of a long low edifice by Rory Moir who was Knighted in the days of James the sixth. The entrance was of old from the sea side by a very long and narrow stair but a new approach has of late been formed by throwing a bridge across a chasm which now renders it of easy access. There is an excellent well situated in the narrow passage leading from the sea, the property of McLeod of McLeod |

Ordnance Survey - Inverness county
Ordnance Survey was established in the 18th century to create maps, surveys and associated records for the entirety of Great Britain. These records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Ordnance Survey records for the county of Inverness, which is in the north of Scotland. The boundaries of the county were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891.
