Rev. [Reverend] Alexander Macgregor Mr. Duncan Macintyre Mr John Macrae Mr Macdonald, Ord |
051 | This name applies to an old Castle situated on the North-west Coast of the Parish of Sleat; the present height of the walls is about nine feet the building appears to have been constructed in the form of a pallelagram, with small Semicircular towers at the corners towards the sea, the latter are now almost invisable owing to the amount of loose stones & rubish lying about. At extreme high tides it is Surrounded, but at ordinary tides the Channel is quite dry. The Prison & Draw Well referred to in the Statistical account of the parish, are now invisable The meaning of the word Sgaith is obscure tradition gives it as "Old Ossianic Fort" Right Hon [Honourable] Lord Macdonald proprietor The most complete parts of this structure are now the walls which supported the drawbridge, although the bridge itself is gone. Ordnance Survey - Inverness county
Ordnance Survey was established in the 18th century to create maps, surveys and associated records for the entirety of Great Britain. These records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Ordnance Survey records for the county of Inverness, which is in the north of Scotland. The boundaries of the county were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891.
