051 | This name is given to a small low-water rock in Loch Easaird, situated about a mile to the West of the district of Heaste, It is entirely covered at high water The name is gaelic, and signifies "Island of Gravel" "Ghrinneal" was suggested by O.S. Exr. [Ordnance Survey Examiner] from the meaning given viz [videlicet] "gravel Island": the Examiner (field) wrote it "Gairneal", which was probably an error of transcription for Gormuil: an example of how false names are sometimes written. Gormul in Norse would mean "mud lump", a more probable Etymology than "Gorm-shùil" = blue-eye, the meaning given by the 2 boatmen. |

Ordnance Survey - Inverness county
Ordnance Survey was established in the 18th century to create maps, surveys and associated records for the entirety of Great Britain. These records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Ordnance Survey records for the county of Inverness, which is in the north of Scotland. The boundaries of the county were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891.
