010 | [situation] About 3/4 Mile W.N.W. [West North West] from Coalston Mains A large and handsome mansion pleasantly situated on the sides of a gentle sloping hill, and surrounded with a large demesne well wooded with full grown wood and ornamental parks, gardens, orchards &c. The wood appears many hundreds of years old. A square tower forming the west wing of the mansion is very ancient, having been built by the Giffords, and is beleived not to be surpassed in strength or height by any fortalice in the Kingdom. This tower was anciently called Lethington and was long the residence of the Lauderdale family. John Duke of Lauderdale was born and spent most of his days here. The change of the name was made by Alexander Lord Blantyre in honour of, & gratitude to his relation, Frances Duchess of Lennox and Richmond, who by a large bequest enabled him to purchase it. It is the property of Lord Blantyre. |

Ordnance Survey - East Lothian county
Ordnance Survey was established in the 18th century to create maps, surveys and associated records for the entirety of Great Britain. These records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Ordnance Survey records for the county of East Lothian, which is in the east of Scotland. The boundaries of the county were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891.
