010 | This castle is situated on the Eastern margin of the River Tyne, and was a place of Considerable Strength in olden times, About one half of the origanal building is still standing, the walls of which are of immence thickness, and in tolerable preservation, but every succeeding year adds its quota to their decay - the site of the remainder can be easily traced. It was once the seat of the Celebrated Earl of Bothwell; it is stated that Queen Mary after her Capture by him at Crammond Brig, sojourned in this Castle for a Short time on her way to Dunbar. |
