008 | [Situation] About 1 mile N.W. by W. [North West by West] from Dolphingston A Small harbour, on the Firth of Fort, now chiefly used as a landing place for Fishermen's Small craft, its imports and exports are chiefly Rock-salt and Coal. It was first constructed by the monks of Newbattle. James V. granted them a charter dated April 26th 1526 empowering them to construct a Port within their own Lands of Prestongrange from whence they might export the coal they had had the ingenuity to discover in this part of the country, it is considered a safe Harbour and has only ten feet of water at spring tides. It is the property of Sir G.G Suttie of Preston Grange. |
