007 | The portion of the valley lying between Broomhouse Mill and Oswaldean is supposed to be the place where the Scots Army under the Earls of Buchan, Lennox and Mar, were met and defeated by the English under Earl Warrene, in 1296. The castle of Dunbar was then being besieged by the English, And the party of the Scots defeated were on their way to reinforce that garison. The action was short and decisive, the Scots being routed and pursued as far a Selkirk Forest. The Revd [Reverend] John Jaffray was refered to to point out the site of this battle, and it is his opinion, that the valley above mentioned is the place. James Miller, in his Hist. [History] of Dunbar, supposes it to be the valley near Oswaldean, the Farmers of the neighbourhood are of the same opinion. |
