006 | Dunbar Castle stands at the north end of the Town, its possition is peculiarly strong bold and Wild and deemed impregnable in Older times, which is quite evident from the numerous sieges it sustained. The time of its erection cannot be precisely ascertained but was evidently built by the Picts at an early Period of the Christian era, when these adventurers emigrated from Germany and fixed one of their principal seats in the Lothians. It is built of a red sandstone similar to that found in the different Quarries in the Neighbourhood. In the North West quarter of the ruins is an apartment about 12 feet square and nearly inaccessible which tradition denominates the room Occupied by Queen Mary during the time of her stay at Dunbar after her Celebrated Capture at Cramond Brig by Bothwell. On the meeting of Parliment in December 1567, in the reign of King James the 6th of Scotland An Act was passed and subsequently carried into effect for its total demolition. Thus fell the Castle of Dunbar after it sustained the Brunt of War and ravages of the storm for upwards of 7 Centuries of well authenticated history. |
