| REDHOUSE CASTLE (Ruins of) | Redhouse Castle Redhouse Castle Redhouse Castle |
Thomas Christison Andrew Anderson Stat Acct. [Statistical Account] 1841 |
004 | [situation] About 1 1/4 miles S.E. [South East] by S. [South] from Gosford House. The ruins of an old castle on the farm of Redhouse. Its walls are of considerable thickness and stands about 6 storeys in height but roofless. The date of its erection is not known in the locality. On a stone above the door is the following inscription. R M D. MVIDOMINVS . TRVSTRARD "Redhouse Castle stands on the margin of a small stream which separates the parish from Glasdmuir, and, though now utterly in ruins, seems to have been a mansion of considerable extent. The date of its erection is not exactly known, but it was probably built towards the close of the 16th century, or perhaps at a still earlier period. The Situation is imposing and it has attached to it an extensive garden with an excellent exposure and well stocKed with fruit trees still productive. The lands of Redhouse were held in the 15th century by the Laings, one of which family was Treasurer of Scotland in 1465 Bishop of Glasgow in 1473 and High Chancellor in 1483. From this family the estate came by marriage into the hands of Sir A. Hamilton brother of the first Earl of Haddington." See Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] of Haddington. |

Ordnance Survey - East Lothian county
Ordnance Survey was established in the 18th century to create maps, surveys and associated records for the entirety of Great Britain. These records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Ordnance Survey records for the county of East Lothian, which is in the east of Scotland. The boundaries of the county were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891.
