004 | A small village consisting of two irregular rows of houses from one to three storys high generally all in good repair and occupied by Shopkeepers tradesmen and agricultural Labourers. It is situated 15 miles W. [West] of Edinburgh and 5 1/2 W N W [West North West] of Haddington. Situate at the head of a long flat Sandy beach at the Mouth of the Peffer Burn. There are three public houses one [Churh] and a number of grocers Shops in it, a Ph [Parish] church and school a post office, and an ancient Stone Cross an emblem of its being formerly a Market town. It is the property of different proprietors Chiefly the Earl of Wemyss. No fairs or markets have been held in it within the Memory of the present generation. |
