015 | [Situation] North of the village of Gifford This name applies to five arable fields at the N. E. [North-East] end of the village of Gifford. These fields are a sort of common property to the feuars or those having freehold property in the village of Gifford each of which is here entitled to the grazing of one cow each of the feuars paying 10 Shillings per annum to the Marquis of Tweedale the lord of the manor. The part not occupied as pasture for the above purpose is let to the public yearly or half yearly as required and the surplus proceeds, after paying the above 10 Shilling to the lord of the manor for each feuar, is applied as part of the public expenses of the village. The feuars appoint two persons whom they designate Bailies to let the property & collect the proceeds, etc. Two annual fairs for the sale of sheep one in March the other in October are held alternately in each of the above fields. |
