Parish of Humbie

64 - Keith Church (Ruins of)[and the Situation as] About 7/8 Mile S.S.W [South-South-West] from Old Duncrahill

[notes]
As this was a parish
Church "Keith Church" (&
not Chapel) is the proper designation.

The parish of Humbie comprehends the ancient districts of Keith-
-Hundeby and Keith-Marshal. At the epoch of record Keith, appears
to have been the ancient name of the whole district. From David I. Hervei
obtained a grant of the N.W. [North-West] half of this district which was called from
him Keith Hervey & afterwards called Keith Marshall. From the
Same King Simon Frazer acquired a grant of the S E. [South-East] half of the
same district which was denominated from him Keith-Simon and was
afterward called Keith-Hundeby. As the Church stood within the district of
Keith Simon Hervei erected a chapel within his own district or manor
for the use of his tenants. After a lapse of time this district was made
a distinct parish with its chapel for the separate church and was thenceforth
independent and of the church of Keith-Simon. - See Chalmers account of Humbie

Ordnance Survey - East Lothian county

Ordnance Survey was established in the 18th century to create maps, surveys and associated records for the entirety of Great Britain. These records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Ordnance Survey records for the county of East Lothian, which is in the east of Scotland. The boundaries of the county were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891.
