| GALLOW HILL | Gallow Hill Gallow Hill Gallow Hill Gallow Hill Gallow Hill |
Mr. Ogilvy of Inshewan Propr. [Proprietor] J. McDonald, Glenquiech T. Dundas Knock Mr. Mann, Strone Mr. Bowman, Strone |
025 | A fine hill south of Knock Hill with tolerably steep descent on the north side. The south side mingles gradually with the adjoining grounds. On the top of this hill (which is now all planted with fir wood) about the highest point, there is a "ring" of stones, as it is called by the people, where according to tradition the Gallows was erected when needed. There is nothing mentioned of this object or the name of the hill either in Historical or the Statistical Accounts of the Parish. The proprietor - Mr. Ogilvy of Inshewan, knows the tradition respecting the "ring", but that is all. |

Co. [County] Forfar -- Tannadice Ph. [Parish]
Circle [note]
in two places
[Initialled] JB Major
This so called "Ring" is a circle of boulder
stones of the class connected with the prehistoric
Era - and about 5 chains to the northward
is another of the same character, but smaller
in diameter and formed of rather smaller stones.
Again about 3 chains to the north, is a
solitary boulder stone (not noticed on the Plan).
I conceive these objects to have no connection with the Gallows.

Ordnance Survey - Angus county
Ordnance Survey was established in the 18th century to create maps, surveys and associated records for the entirety of Great Britain. These records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Ordnance Survey records for the county of Angus, which is in the east of Scotland. The boundaries of the county were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891.
