Abercromby in his history of Scotland mentions
that about the year 1338 while David II was
in France and Sir Andrew Murray guardian
of Scotland. a bloody battle was fought at Panmure
with a party of the forces of Edward III in which
4000 of the English were let upon the Spot and
among the rest Lord Henry Mountfort who seems to
have been their general. The Guardian Sir. a. Murray
commanded the Scots in person. He with the Earls
of March & Fife had been lying in the Forest of Platane
in Angus (of which the author declares his ignorance)
and from that marched with his forces to Panmure
where the battle ensued. It is represented as a
victory of considerable consequence as it led
to the reduction of the Castles of Leuchars,
St Andrews, Falkland- and all others in
Angus & Fife (exept that of Cupar) in favor
of David's party.
The spot on which this battle was
fought is understood to be north of
Panmure - near Crombiemill
