| HATTON CASTLE (Ruins of) | Hatton Castle Hatton Castle |
Revd. [Reverend] Mr. Moon Mr. Wilson (schoolmaster) |
043 | [Situation] About 1/4 mile SE [South East] of the village. This Castle is situated a short way to the east of the Village of Newtyle close to the Dundee and Newtyle Railway. It is in a ruinous state. This castle was not intended for a bastlet or place of strength: yet in the year 1645 the Earl of Craufurd occupied it with a garrison in the interest of the Covenanters at which time the Marquis of Montrose celebrated for blood-shedding meditated an attack upon it; and after the battle of Auldearn he advanced to within a few miles of it. Just as Montrose had completed his preparations for the assault, almost the whole of his troops deserted. It was built in 1575 by Lawrence Lord Oliphant. |

Ordnance Survey - Angus county
Ordnance Survey was established in the 18th century to create maps, surveys and associated records for the entirety of Great Britain. These records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Ordnance Survey records for the county of Angus, which is in the east of Scotland. The boundaries of the county were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891.
