their chief designation, though they are sometimes
designed Fothringhame, the present family
seat, in the united parishes of Inverarity
and Meathie. The ruins stand upon the
elevated ground on the north side of the
Vale of Dighty, at the distance of about
three miles from Dundee by the road to Forfar,
and at the head of that part of the road
which, from its steep ascent, has acquired
the popular name of "Powrie Brae". They
consist of two heavily detached parts, one
small portion of the back part being occupied
by some of the servants of the adjoining
farm. All the vaults are entire, and are
applied to various uses connected with
the business of the farm. In the front part
of the ruins, there is a large apartment, imme-
diately above the vaults, co-extensive with the
whole length and breadth of the building,
which may have been the hall. The
mouldings surrounding the chimney,
which still remain pretty entire, are not
inelegantly designed; and on the lintel
there is a scutcheon of the arms of Fothringhame
impaled with three boars' heads erased,
accompanied with two fancifully formed
letters, T.F., the initials of Thomas Fothringhame,
on a deeply moulded panel. There is no date
