032 | An oblong building 4 storeys high and in tolerably good repair. There appears to have been a wing extending from the southeast of which a part of the wall is still to be seen jutting from the main building. D. Wilkie Esqr. believes it to have been built about 400 years ago by the Ancestors of the present Sir John Ogilvie M.P. [Member of Parliament] "At Invercarity there is a Gothic building of cut stone in good repair, when it was erected is uncertain; but it must have been before the 15th. century. It consists of 4 stories. The walls are about 9 ft. [feet] thick, project considerably near the top, and terminate in a parapet not more than a foot thick. To the east of the gate which fronts the south are some vestiges of a wing, demolished, it is said by the Earl of Crawford in 1445, in some family feud between the Lindsays & Ogilvies, one of whom was then proprietor of Invercarity." The Castles of Affleck or Auchinleck in the Parish
of Monikie and of Inverquharity on the banks of
the Prosen near Kirriemuir are among the best
and most entire in Angus. They are fine
ashlar buildings.
