Mr. Osler Mr. Wilkie |
031 | A tolerably sized hill on the farm of Mems. No tract or the least appearance of the following Cave can be found out here. "Tacitus obseres in his a/c [account] of the manner of the Germans, that it was their custom to dig Caves in the earth, where they laid up their grain & lived in Winter; and that in these caves they would find shelter from their enemies, of such caves there are several in Kirriemuir. The most remarkable is the "Weems Hole" on the top of the hill of Mearns, built with stone and covered above with large unpolished stones about 6ft. [feet] wide, the entry lies towards the south: and its course may be traced the length of 60 or 70 yards. The stones now covering the Cave are overgrown with earth, and the total length of it is not perceptible. This Cave has been opened and a great many human bones, with some querns & other curiosities were found in it." New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] |

Plan 31.8 -- Parish of Kirriemuir -- Forfarshire
Mems Hill [note]
Mr. McNicol farmer at Balnagarrow informs me that his brother, the late Dr. [Doctor] Nicol
made a search for this Cave, by digging up in several portions of the hill, but could not find it,
There are no object called Weems Hole & the hill is called Mems Hill not "Mearns Hill"
In making inquiry at at Mr. Wilkie Forester and Overseer at Kinnordy, he believes that the
writer of the Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] has made the mistake in placing it in the wrong parish, as there is an
object called "Weems Hole" on the summit of Mearns Hill situated a few miles
northeast of Brechin.

Ordnance Survey - Angus county
Ordnance Survey was established in the 18th century to create maps, surveys and associated records for the entirety of Great Britain. These records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Ordnance Survey records for the county of Angus, which is in the east of Scotland. The boundaries of the county were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891.
