New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] of Forfarshire p. [page] 643
Forfarshire is remarkable for its great number of ancient Sculptured Stones which are
found in different localities. The age in which they were erected, and by what people, and for
what purpose have been long the subject of desquisition among antiquaries, but from my de-
ciphering of the Inscription of one of the principal stones of this class which is in the church
yard of St. Vigians, (See Name Book for ph. [parish] of St. Vigians), it appears pretty plainly that they belong
to the age of the establishment of Christianity in this district, or at least not long afterwards, and
that they were erected by a christian people as sepulchral monuments to commemorate their
illustrious dead. J.C.
* There appears to be no good authority for stating that a cairn Stood here as mentioned in the above

Ordnance Survey - Angus county
Ordnance Survey was established in the 18th century to create maps, surveys and associated records for the entirety of Great Britain. These records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Ordnance Survey records for the county of Angus, which is in the east of Scotland. The boundaries of the county were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891.
