054 | [Situation] On the south side of Nethergate A small building is pointed out as being the remains of the Town's Hospital. This building consists of the central part of a cabinet makers premises consisting of ware rooms and work shops, Occupied by Mr. D. Anderson. This part of the building of the hospital does not appear to be very ancient and is of plain architecture 3 storeys high. - Before the Reformation the hospital was an Institution belonging to the brethren of the Holy Trinity or Red Friars, the building of which appears to have been preserved notwithstanding the demolition of religious houses &c. at the eve of the Reformation and was long after used as an hospital for the use of the town. From entries in the accounts of the hospital lately printed for evidence in case of a lawsuit between the presbytery, and the magistrates of Dundee and made out by Mr. Cosmo Innes it appears the hospital was burned in 1645 and was soon afterwards rebuilt. It also appears to have undergone many alterations from time to time. It was fitted up in 1754 as a workhouse and in 1757 was made a prison for French prisoners. From [continued on page 56] |
