Mr. Charles Rogers Mr. James Thomson William Reid Esqr. Sketch map of Hospital properties in Dundee by Mr Reid Mr. McIntosh West Port Dundee |
054 | [Situation] At the north end of Temple Lane This is the site of a port or gate which was the entrance on the NW [North West] side of the town after it was fortified by a wall & deep ditch in 1547. The Street here is now in progress of draining and the foundation of the wall has been dug up. and the ditch which was on the outside is easily traced but independent of this evidence tradition points out the spot as the site of the port. The street at this place is named after this port or gate, West Port, as it would appear that the port was anciently called Argyle's Port and in after times West Port. "Dundee was formerly fortified with walls begun by the English and completed in 1547 by the French. The existence and even the position of its gates are Commemorated in the names of its streets, Nethergate, Overgate Seagate, and Murraygate, The first formerly called Fluckergate and the second Argylegate." Ordnance Survey - Angus county
Ordnance Survey was established in the 18th century to create maps, surveys and associated records for the entirety of Great Britain. These records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Ordnance Survey records for the county of Angus, which is in the east of Scotland. The boundaries of the county were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891.
