035 | A large mass of dangerous rock partly covered at Low Water, but only accessible during the lowest spring tides. Ships have been frequently lost on this rock which would be better recognised as Silly Rock from this being the name lately given by the Coast Guard officially in Newspapers with reference to the wreck of a ship. It is generally supposed that Silly is a corruption of Sallow Craig. Its dangerous situation & the dark appearance of the place when the Tide rises confirms the origin of Sallow but as before stated Silly is much better [known.] Several will be found who do not recognize Sallow Craig when "Silly Craig" is at once pointed out as a well known name. |
