025 | [Township or Parish] Largo A Small village Situated on the Coast of the Firth of Forth, between Largo Burn and Keil Burn the former divides it from the Village of Temple and the latter divides it from the village of Drumochie. It consists of two rows of dwelling houses about 25 Chains long, irregularly Stuated and having a few Scatterd houses in the rows of them the houses are from on to three storys high, Chiefly the former, And Occupied Chiefly by Handloom weavers, A Few fishermen trades people, & Agricultural Labourers There is two Inns in the village one of them being also a Grocers Shop, And One other Grocers Shop there is one Church and one School - there is No P. [Post] Office or other public building of any Kind. This village is the birth place of "Alexander Selkirk", who was rendered famous by M. de Foe under the Name of Robinson Crusoe - he was born here in the year 1676. In the house Marked in blue. on trace, - he went to sea in his youth - and in the Year 1703, being Sailing Master of the Ship Cinque Captain Hardling, bound for the South Seas, - he was put on Shore on the Island of Juan Fernandez, as a punishment for mutiny in that Solitude remained for four years & four months - he was then relieved and brought to England by Captain Woods Rogers. - his gun, Chest, Cup, Kettle, Hatchet, & other things had with him on the Island are still preserved - by relations of his in the village. |
