"without male issue. Robert Bethune also of an ancient family in fife, married his daughter the heiress of Balfour, Still, however retaining the name of Bethune. From this house several respectable families of the name of Bethune have descended. James Bethune, Archbishop of St. Andrews, and Chancellor of Scotland, his nephew David Bethune Cardinal & Chancellor of Scotland, and the Cardinal's Nephew James bethune, Archbishop of Glasgow, were all three of this house of Balfour." "Balor, so designated from its situation near the confluence of the Ore & Leven. It was the original seat of Balfour, who thence derive their name, - one of the most ancient and respectable in Fife. About the year 1360 John de Bethune, described as 'familiaris regis Roberti', married the daughter and heiress of Sir Michael de Balfour of that ilk, and with her obtained the estate of Balfour." "The River of Leven, has a few fine seats upon it, and of antient great families. The first we see going westward and up the River, on the South brink of it, is, Balfour, or Balor. It is a fine house with Gardens and enclosures, and is one of the seats of Mr. James Bethune. It gave the name of Balfour to a very ancient family that were heritors of it."
