[continued from page 7] of Sir Robert Douglas of Lochleven. - The Earl of Northumberland was imprisoned in Lochleven castle from 1569 to about the end of 1572." Stat Acct. [Statistical Account] Vol. [Volume] VI. No. 22.

"Loch Leven Castle stands in an island measuring about 8 English acres, which island is situated nearly in the middle of a Loch or Lake, about 12 miles in circumference and in many places 24 fathoms deep. It is not Known when this Castle was built. It occcurs in history as early as the year 1335, when it was besieged by Sir John de Sterling. &c" Gross's Antiquities Vol [Volume] 2 page 225

"The Castle of Lochleven is situated upon an island of about 2 acres, near the N,W, [North West] extremity of the lake, and directly opposite to the point of the promontory already mentioned. It is needless to tell how this fortress belonged originally to Dongart, King of the Picts, was inhabited by Alexander III. besieged by Edward I. and latterly posessed by a branch of the Douglases now represented by the Earl of Morton. It is sufficient to Know that it was the residence, in 1567, of the most beautiful of Queens and the most hapless of Women." Chamber's Picture of Scotland Vol [Volume] 2 P. [Page] 165

"The Castle of Loch Leven stands in an Island, in the north west part of the Loch, half a mile, or so, distant from the shore. Sir James Balfour, in his notes, tells, that it was the ancient habitation of Congal, Son of Dongart, King of the Picts, who Founded the Same. The Book of Scone shows says that it was valliantly defended by Sir Allan Wypont for King David II. against all the English party then in Scotland Anno 1335. &c. Sibbald's Fife & Kinross P.
